One sport and two techniques: classic & skating

The classic style

For beginners and slightly advanced skiers, the classic style is somewhat easier. In cross-country skiing, the skis move in pre-formed tracks, called trails. These provide stability and balance. The movement in cross-country skiing is similar to running.

The cross-country ski for the classic technique has a climbing zone on the ski base under the foot for the ascent and a gliding zone (front and back). The climbing zone of these new cross-country skis consists of a skin that provides the necessary grip for the ascent. For good thrust, the cross-country ski poles should reach under the armpits.

The skating style

In skating, you do not use the pre-marked tracks, but you move freely on the “smooth” cross-country track. The movement is similar to ice or inline skating. Some practice is required because you combine the skating movement of the legs with the pushing off of the arms.

The cross-country ski for the skating technique has a single glide zone on the base along the entire length of the ski and is skied slightly shorter than the ski for the classic technique. The cross-country ski poles must reach the chin to allow optimal arm thrust.

Cross-country skiing in Val Gardena and on the Alpe di Siusi

The Vallunga is a narrow, idyllic valley behind the village center of Selva Gardena. The cross-country ski trail starts at the foot of Monte Stevia in the Puez-Odle Nature Park and extends for 5 km to Pra d’Arì. It is a beautiful and quiet area, perfect for cross-country skiing. The trails are suitable for both beginners and experienced athletes.

Monte Pana is located above Santa Cristina. You can reach the alp by chairlift or directly by car. The alp offers a beautiful panoramic view of the peaks of Sassolungo and Lake Piatto. The cross-country ski trail starts right next to the parking lot and leads over several laps with different levels of difficulty. Those who conquer the individual climbs are rewarded by reaching the “Palusc” meadow in the middle of untouched woods. After several descents, they return to the starting point at the parking lot. The cross-country skiing center on Monte Pana is visited every year by several national cross-country skiing teams for their training sessions.

The Alpe di Siusi is the highest plateau in Europe and lies at an altitude of 2,000 meters. There are several kilometers of cross-country ski trails here. The Alpe di Siusi can be reached by cable car from Ortisei and Siusi.
